Competition 2012 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Competition

In the $2-3 million dollar category, there is quite literally no competition for this car. Nothing on today’s market exhibits the use of carbon fiber to the same extent that the Sesto Elemento has and in the near future don’t look for any rivals. The Koenigsegg Agera R is close in some respects, but goes about things completely differently. It and the Bugatti Veyron are more concerned with using brute force to reach high speeds, where the Lamborghini was initially a testbed for CFRP technology. Koenigsegg is a company that has a lot of experience with carbon fiber as well, but has nowhere near the resources that Lamborghini can pull from thanks to the help from Boeing. Overall, this car will go down in the history books as one of the most radical design concepts to ever come from Sant’Agata Bolognese – and that is not something said every day.

Pricing 2012 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Pricing

The production Sesto Elemento is rumored to be priced at 1.9 million euro, or about $2.8 million at the current exchange rates, with units arriving in October 2011. Apparently, only 20 units of this supercar will be built, with three headed over to stateside.

Performance 2012 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Performance

With the Elemento having an overall curb weight of just 2,202 lbs and a massive V10 power unit feeding a permanent all-wheel drive system, this car is sure to impress on the track. Output is 570hp giving the lightweight bull a power to weight ratio of 1.75 kilograms per horsepower. What that statistic really comes down to is the car being able to accelerate from a standstill through 60mph in 2.5 seconds.

The V10 offers 5,204 cm3 of displacement, delivering a specific output of 80.5 kW (109.6 hp) per liter of displacement. The engine utilizes an aluminum crankcase including dry sump lubrication and a cylinder angle of 90 degrees. Both solutions are an integral part of the lightweight engineering approach, as well as serving to lower the center of gravity and thus tighten the handling characteristics. Ideal combustion chamber fill comes courtesy of a switch-over induction system and continually variable, chain-driven camshafts.

Interior 2012 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Interior

Lamborghini has been able to take a standard car interior and completely turn it on its head. The design of the Sesto Elemento circles around function rather than form and the first defines the latter. The interior is exclusively shaped by the carbon fiber monocoque tub which provides a minimalist yet purely Lamborghini feeling. The most unique feature is the fact that the Sesto Elemento does not have seats. Quite literally the cushioning is fixed to the carbon fiber tub giving the driver an unparalled sense of road feel. In order to adapt drivers of differing stature the steering wheel is completely adjustable for height and reach. Furthermore, the pedals can be adjusted longitudinally.

Exterior 2012 Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Exterior

The main component of the new Sesto Elemento is carbon fiber and more specifically carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). Lamborghini has been able to successfully develop a process that takes the material from 3D design through simulation, validation, testing, and finally into production. Its collaboration with the Boeing company is perhaps one of the most important to the development of this vehicle. The two companies have been able to develop the CFRP design much further than ever before thanks to their ACRC (Advanced Composite Research Center). Two of the most unique parts designed for the exterior are the wheels made entirely out of carbon fiber and the exhaust system which is made out of a material called Pyrosic. This is a glass ceramic composite that can withstand high heat.

“We are obviously delighted to announce the continuation of our partnership with Ben for the 2012 season and we hope that he will remain at Yamaha for many years to come. Ben has shown his ability to successfully compete at the highest level; firstly by becoming Yamaha’s first World Superbike champion in 2009 and then attaining the status of Best Rookie in 2010 with the Tech3 Yamaha Team.
His transition to the Yamaha Factory Racing team in 2011 has just begun and we have every confidence in Ben’s abilities and high potential for the future. This timely decision now allows us to concentrate on the present championship and, in parallel, to prepare for our 2012 MotoGP program with the change to the 1000cc bikes.”

Reed and Fiolek on Top at Freestone

Honda Red Riders claimed victories at round two of the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross Championship and WMA Women's Motocross Championship over the weekend at the Freestone National held in Wortham, TX. For the second week in a row, Honda newcomer Chad Reed took the overall round win on his Honda CRF450R, while American Honda Racing's Ashley Fiolek chalked up her first overall victory of the season on her Honda CRF250R.

Filling in for American Honda Racing riders Trey Canard and Josh Grant, who are both recovering from injuries they sustained during the Supercross season, veteran Honda racer Kevin Windham gave it his all in the grueling Texas heat. After suffering a mechanical issue in the opening moto that forced him out of the race, Windham secured ninth position in moto two and finished the weekend 17th overall. "Definitely not the result I was looking for in moto one," said Windham. "Unfortunately, I spent a lot of my energy early in moto one, and I hit a wall around the 15-minute mark in moto two—the Texas heat just got me. We've got an off weekend now so we'll use the extra time to get better and have a good showing in Mt. Morris in two weeks' time."

Strong Performance in Miller for Yamaha World Superbike Team

Yamaha World Superbike riders Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri fought hard in difficult conditions in Miller Motorsports Park today, U.S. " Memorial Day" Monday, to take home well-earned points and with both riders now in the top four on the 2011 Championship standings. Variable weather conditions throughout the weekend did not render the infamously difficult and technically demanding American track any easier. Melandri tried his R1 machine in Miller for his first time ever on a dry track in Saturday's first qualifying, conditions that did not represent themselves until today's races. With Sunday's extremely wet weather the Italian was unable to improve various potential dry chassis set ups on the second qualifying day.

Unpredictable Weather Signals the Start to the Grand Prix of Catalunya
The MotoGP paddock had a less than perfect start to the GP of Catalunya today at the Montmeló circuit as changing weather conditions disrupted the first free practice sessions. A sunny morning gradually changed to deliver spots of rain towards the end of the first practice. The second session in the afternoon saw the same disruption with the first 30 minutes wet and just over 20 minutes of drying time available at the end for the riders.

Both Yamaha Factory Racing riders made as much use of the dry time as possible, testing some different chassis settings and for Ben Spies some different body positioning in the hunt for more performance. Lorenzo and his team mate recorded their fastest times of the day in the morning session going fourth and fifth respectively, positions they retained in the second heat, giving them a provisional second row position.

Crutchlow learning fast, Edwards injured in Catalunya
The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team started the Catalunya MotoGP round in Spain with a day of contrasting fortunes for Cal Crutchlow and Colin Edwards.

Crutchlow once again demonstrated his expert skill at learning new tracks fast to finish seventh fastest on the combined timesheets, the British rider producing another impressive performance on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team YZR-M1 machine on a circuit he's never ridden at before in his career.

He set a best time of 1'44.797 to finish less than 0.2s away from the top five, the 25-year-old setting a competitive pace on a dry and damp track as the first day of action was disrupted by rain showers.
The fifth round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship ended in premature and painful fashion for team-mate Edwards though after he was diagnosed with a broken right collarbone following a heavy crash in this afternoon's second free practice session.

The day had started full of promise for Edwards and the experienced American was sixth fastest this morning with a best time of 1'44.768. The opening day of action saw frequent rain showers dampen the Montmelo circuit and a cloudburst during the early 125cc practice session meant the second MotoGP session got underway on a damp track.

The track dried rapidly and with just over 15 minutes remaining, the field switched to slick tyres as lap times significantly improved with the better conditions. Edwards had completed one run on slick rubber when he switched bikes and was an out lap when he crashed at Turn 5. He landed heavily and was immediately attended to by trackside marshals before being transferred to the Medical Centre, where further checks revealed he'd suffered a broken right collarbone.

Edwards was later taken to the Dexeus Institute Hospital in Barcelona where he will undergo surgery performed by Dr Xavier Mir, who has previously treated Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.

COMMENT

Jorge Lorenzo(Position : 4th Time: 1'43.810 Laps: 15)
"Today we didn't ride so much because the rain started at the end of the first session and the opposite in the afternoon. There were only 20 minutes of dry time at the end so we had only eight laps more or less to try some settings of the bike. We are quite far from first position but we have another full practice tomorrow morning to improve. I'm happy to be here with my home crowd but it's going to be tough to fight for victory. I need to be patient and calm and give it the maximum and fight for the podium."

Ben Spies(Position : 5th Time: 1'44.646 Laps: 24)
"I'm feeling good about today, it was a tricky session going out in the rain and dry, you couldn't see how wet it was on the track so I had to feel it out a bit. We had a pretty big change on the bike trying to move my position around; I think we've found something and we're hoping to now get some more dry time tomorrow. To be top five at the end of the first practice day and closer to the front is a lot better so we'll keep building on this."

Wilco Zeelenberg ,Team Manager
"We had an odd first day; it's difficult to judge where we are because the circumstances were very strange, wet in the beginning and dry at the end of the second session. Compared to last year the lap times are slower but everybody has more or less the same situation. Hopefully tomorrow it dries so we can prepare ourselves for Sunday, so far we have no major problems."

Massimo Meregalli ,Team Director
"The weather didn't help us so much to work on the set up of the bikes today but I can see that we had good speed and after both sessions we have both riders in the top five which is a good starting point for the weekend. Let's wait and see what we can do tomorrow."

Cal Crutchlow(Position: 7th Time: 1'44.797)
"I really like the track. It seems to suit my riding style and it turned to be a positive first day for me. I used the same set of slick tyres all day and I ran the hard rear tyre, so I'm sure I could have gone quicker if I'd used the softer option. I did a few laps in the wet but it wasn't really wet conditions and it was a bit of a waste of time. Learning the braking markers is one of the biggest challenges and in the first corner, I was losing 0.4s on the brakes just at that point. I could m ake up time in other places but you can't afford to lose that much time in just one corner. I followed Valentino for a little bit and that was nice because you can learn stuff really quickly. He is smooth as silk and it is incredible to be learning off somebody who is my hero, but if I keep improving there is no reason why I can't have a good qualifying and be fighting for the top ten again in the race. I'm really sad that Colin has got injured. He's been riding brilliantly all season and everybody at Monster Yamaha Tech 3 wishes him a speedy recovery."

Herve Poncharal, Team Manager
"Unfortunately Colin has broken his right collarbone and this is a big shame for him and for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team because we were confident he was going to be very strong and competitive this weekend. Colin has been superb so far this season and he has shown that even when the competition is probably stronger than ever in MotoGP, he is still one of the fastest out there. It looks like he paid a heavy price for a very small mistake. He landed heavily on his shoulder and it was clear from the TV pictures that he was in a lot of pain. He will have an operation tonight, so we should have a clearer idea of how long the recovery process will be later this weekend. The important thing now is that he rests and recovers as quickly as he possibly can. We wish him a fast recovery and hope that it is not too long before we see him back in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team garage."

Construction Begins on New Motorcycle Test Course at Kikugawa, Shizuoka Pref.

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. will begin construction in June of this year on its planned new test course in the Tanno area of Kikugawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Construction of this Kikugawa Test Course was originally scheduled to begin in October of 2009 upon acquisition of all the land after a permit for diverting agricultural land for other use was granted in August of that year. According to that plan, the facility was scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2012. However, the economic effects of the Lehman Shock and ensuing recession caused a postponement of the construction project. The decision has been made to proceed with the project, albeit with reduced budget, due to requests from the national and local government as the grantors of construction rights and the local landowners involved, as well as increased demand for motorcycle development for the growing markets of Asia, Central and South America and other regions.

The new test course facility will be constructed on acquired land, an area of approximately 490,000 m2 and will consist of a 1.9 km/lap closed course, roads over hilly terrain, road sections for dust-resistance testing and related facilities. It will be used for tests involved in achieving the required levels of safety and environmental performance for medium to small displacement motorcycles for emerging markets.
In consideration of maintaining the natural environment surrounding the facility, a prescribed width of existing vegetation will be preserved and measures will be taken to protect the existing wildlife ecosystems in other wooded areas of the site.
